International Men’s Day!

This International Men’s Day, we’re proud to celebrate the incredible men at Gemini who have overcome challenges, shown resilience, and paved the way for successful careers. Their stories reflect determination, teamwork, and a commitment to supporting others.

John Henderson:

This International Men’s Day, we’re proud to highlight the journey of John Henderson, Gemini Accident Repairs’ Head of Training and Development. With a career spanning several decades in the training sector, nearly twenty of which have been dedicated to Gemini, John’s leadership and dedication have played a pivotal role in shaping Gemini’s Apprenticeship Programmes. His commitment to supporting individuals on their learning journeys has been integral in helping new technicians and the leaders of tomorrow launch their careers.

John Henderson has commented, “Journeys don’t always align with aspirations, but life is about facing challenges and seeking positive destinations. I believe that confidence plays a crucial role in driving personal success, satisfaction, and fulfilment. Throughout my career in training, there have been key principles that have guided me, such as researching and formulating a vision and goals. Choosing the right team members plays a huge part, and both strong leadership and teamwork are essential for success, alongside respecting and supporting those around you. Success will come from leading and growing together.  Over several decades in training, I’ve worked across both education and business within the automotive sector. This experience has allowed me to think outside the box and develop high-quality, innovative training and apprenticeships. One of my proudest accomplishments has been developing upskilling programmes that go beyond industry standards, like the “Platinum Standard” apprenticeships at Gemini. Since 2017, we have welcomed over 150 apprentices into the programme, earning several awards in recognition of our success. For me, training is about collaboration, not competition. Empathy and mutual respect are at the core of my approach, and I’m committed to supporting everyone’s journey to help them grow in confidence and skill.”

Vitaly Simonenko:

This International Men’s Day, we’re proud to highlight the journey of Vitaly Simonenko. Working as a multi-skilled apprentice based at Gemini Manchester, Vitaly’s journey is a testament to how hard work, resilience, determination and teamwork can help someone grow. Vitaly has paved a strong career pathway, and we are proud to have watched him win the Bob Linwood Greener Apprentice Awards 2024.

Jeanette Murphy – Gemini Manchester Manager:

“From the moment Vitaly arrived looking for a job, his enthusiasm and determination shone through, so much so an apprenticeship was offered even though there we no vacancies at Gemini Manchester at the time. Since that day, Vitaly has continued to meet each day with the same dedication, allowing Vitaly to achieve his Accident Repair Technician qualification despite facing setbacks such as Covid and a serious Motorcycle accident which left him needing surgery. Vitaly greets every team member individually and continues his day facing any task with a bright smile and the same grit and determination he showed when he first started. Speaking 5 different languages, he is always willing to help where needed with his Interpretation skills and is not afraid to ask for guidance when he feels he needs to, whatever the issue may be. I am enormously proud to have Vitaly as a valued team member at Gemini Manchester and enjoy watching his career progression each and every day”.

Vitaly Simonenko comments on his journey “Over the past five years, I’ve overcome numerous obstacles, such as Covid and a motorcycle accident that delayed my apprenticeship completion. While recovering, I continued my apprenticeship through online learning over Zoom to stay on track. Nothing was going to stop me from pursuing a career I’m passionate about. Fast forward, and I’ve gained confidence in all areas of repair, and I’m always ready to help other employees when needed. After all, we are a team, and it’s a team effort. When more people are willing to help, more are willing to learn, and I truly believe in that ethos, and I’ll carry it forward in my career. Working together is what has helped me achieve my goals, whether they’re personal or onsite, it’s all about supporting one another.”

Jack Smith:

This International Men’s Day, we proudly share the inspiring journey of one of our team members, Jack Smith, whose resilience, and determination have shaped his career and personal growth. Jack’s road hasn’t always been easy, but with the support of those around him, he has not only overcome significant challenges but also learned to help others along the way. We believe he is a true inspiration, and we applaud how far he’s come, and look forward to seeing him continue to achieve his goals.

Jack Smith:

“Being ex-military, I was diagnosed with PTSD in 2018. While doing my apprenticeship, I received incredible support from the team at Gemini and EMTEC College, which helped me push through difficult times. Since joining Gemini at the Merry Hill site, I’ve faced additional mental health challenges due to my mum’s illness and my responsibility in caring for her. However, I’ve managed to overcome these hurdles by having open conversations with my manager, Ian, and the workshop team. I also use the Headspace app daily for breathing exercises and meditation, which helps with my mental health.”

“Being an Army Cadet Force Sergeant Instructor now has also helped me maintain balance, and putting the uniform back on has been a source of strength. I’m deeply grateful for the support I received during the most challenging periods, especially from the training team at Gemini. Their guidance not only helped me get through tough moments but also continues to support me today.”

“Having completed my apprenticeship, now, with two apprentices under my wing who I mentor, I’m able to offer them the same guidance and support I received. Whether they need help with a task sheet or face challenges in the workshop, I’m here to listen and support them. I hope to inspire others to achieve their goals and show them that no matter how difficult the journey, support and perseverance make all the difference.”
